Very often, eyebags cause other problems such as dark eye circles and are frequently mistaken as eyebags.

The most common include factors such as genetics, habits, illness, improper use of cosmetics, poor blood circulation and aging and can be categorized into 5 major types:

Pigmentation
Our genes and race have a certain degree of influence to the colour of our skin. Other causes such as sun exposure, skin inflammation, atopic dermatitis, allergies and skin irritation can also result in skin pigmentation (which takes on a bluish black shade) in the long run, giving an impression of dark under eyes (or dark eye circles).

Poor Blood Circulation

The skin around the eye is not only the thinnest, but beneath it, they full of blood capillaries. When blood circulation is poor, the blood capillaries turned to a dark purplish blue hue, making the area around the eyes look darker than the rest of the face.

Fatigue, lack of rest, insufficient sleep, chronic allergies, excessive rubbing of the eyes, burning the midnight oil, endocrine disorders, hormonal changes due to menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause, are one of the many causes for dark eye circles.

Gentle massage with eye cream/ gel or laser can improve the dark eye circles appearance, which are due to poor blood circulation or pigmentation.

Bulging of the Under Eyelids Muscles

This muscle is responsible for the opening and closing of the eyes. It is located just below the lower eyelashes. Similar to the theory of forming bigger and more pronounced muscles when we exercise, the under eyelid muscle becomes more obvious as we age due to the need to blink numerous times daily, although for some people, this trait maybe genetic. This constant blinking exercises the under eyelid muscles, resulting in the formation of a bulge just beneath the lower eyelashes. Botox can be injected to relax the muscle and temporary “remove” this “eyebag”.

Arcus Marginalis Deformity/ Tear trough depression

For some people, they suffer from a condition known as arcus marginalis deformity, where the eyelid’s orbital septum thickens and form a rim and attaches to the orbital bone, resulting in a moon-shaped depression below the lower eyelid. The depression of the cheek below the area under the lower eye region can cause an apparent protrusion of the eyebag region. Thanks to age and gravity, the fat may be pulled down and due to age, our skin may become loose due to the lost of collagen, thereby causing pouch to form below the eye. This may in turn cast a shadow causing an impression of dark eye circles.

Arcus marginalis release can be performed or fillers can be injected to treat this condition.

Fluid retention

Fluid retention in the loose spaces under the eye can cause an unsightly bulge. This is often referred to as a fluid sponge swelling, which can even be congenital (i.e. runs in the family). Lymphatic massage can soothe this condition.

Heavy Infra-orbital Fatty Tissues

This is the REAL eyebags. A lot of people develop pouch of fatty tissues under the eyelids which sags as they age (although there are people who are born with this condition). These fatty tissues jut out, resulting in overhanging of the skin, which makes one look constantly tired. Permanent removal of the existing fatty tissues is possible through a surgery called eyebags removal.
